Youth Enterprise Symposium (YES) 2010 Industry Visit by NTUC Club nEbO

We are honoured to be one of the industry partners chosen to host their industry visit under the F&B section. It happened today from 3.30pm - 5.00pm. About 30 students participated in this visit. The students were briefed on how this salon/cafe came into being, followed by a Q&A session based on our experience in running the establishment. The participants were split into four groups and tasked to come up with ideas on how to promote and bring traffic to Hairloom & Caramel. Surprisingly each group came up with at least one idea that's feasible :) Thank you for having us and hope you guys find the experience beneficial and inspiring!

A6 /future/ is a collaboration between 22 illustrators from Singapore and the UK. They are invited to share their thoughts, hopes and dreams about their future through the use of A6-sized postcards.

Following the successful showcase in London's Generation Gallery during the 2009 London Design Festivals, the 22 postcards make their way home for an exclusive showcase at Caramel for one week only.

The Singapore illustrators include Eeshaun, Msxi, Kristal, Kuanth, Zeropointfive, Sheryo, Mindflyer, Seiji, Fadedcrimson, Wei Keong and Random Sunday.

Don't Miss (Muffet) This!

I've been wanting to post about this cute little shop at Icon Village for a while. It's called Muffet's Room. For those of you who's familiar with nursery rhymes, yes it's the Little Miss Muffet who was startled by a spider while having her bowl of soup (porridge? I've never heard of the story until I Googled it because my nursery rhyme was 三只老虎，三只老虎). So far no creepy crawlies had been spotted on my various visits there but good food!

Their signature Fish & Chips is quite something, as an Australian husband of a friend commented that it's the best fish and chips he's had so far in Singapore! Comes in 100g or 200g of fish, with the options of having your fish battered or breaded. They have daily specials of pastas, chicken escalope, etc. I had a nice chicken stew on my last trip there. The portion is quite huge with a whole drumstick and generous servings of beans and veg in the stew. I like the stew not being too tarty. Served with 3 slices of bread.

They also serve blended fruit drinks, coffee, tea, sandwiches (try the chicken salad sandwich), snacks (fish fingers, chips with melted cheese and spicy chicken wings if they went ahead as planned after they let us sampled the wings last time) and desserts (if they bring back the Belgian waffles, please!).

The shop seats a max of 12 pax (I did say it's a cute little shop!) so go early during lunch. They also deliver within Tanjong Pagar area. Prices for savouries range from $5+ to $11+. No GST or service charge even though their service is super friendly! Now go say hi to Ms Muffet and show your support! Also check out their lovely chalk art! Oh, and I LOVE their homemade tartar sauce!

So we dumped the microwave oven which went on strike yesterday and replaced it with the one from our house. Thank goodness it worked fine albeit a bit old and a bit tiny. We're just glad we don't have to cook using tea light candles and we do enjoy the extra space in our home.

Today the microwave oven died on us. No, actually it didn't just die but refused to perform its daily duties. The protest came in the form of light and sound: there were flashing yellow sparks coupled with loud crackling voice that said: "Ima release the Kraken!!" we pulled the plug immediately before Caramel was blown to smithereens. We soon realised we were back in the 1800s without a high frequency heating device.

(This incident happened a few days ago.)

It was a sad night for Caramel and the people who's put so much hard work, care and love into it.

It all started with a birthday party.

CK, the cook, has been corresponding with a girl and her mum for nearly a month to organize this party. After much discussions and planning, they settled on the $30 per pax package, with a guest list of 30. They asked for the 30 cupcakes included in the package to be customized as birthday cupcakes.

They did a bank transfer a few days prior to the event as deposit.

As Caramel can only hold 40 pax in its full capacity, we closed the cafe to public from 6pm onwards for this party of 30.

Eventually, a total of 17 (including her mum) turned up for the party. They ate, drank, took photos and played games.

After the party, it was time to make payment. They only wanted to pay for 17, because that's the total number of guests that showed up.

We were shocked. We've prepared food for more than 30 pax and turned other customers away to cater to this event. But they insisted that they never agreed to paying for 30 pax even if less than 30 turned up.
If they were to pay for 30 pax, then they should have food for 30! We were more than happy to let them take the additional food home. But they turned around and said they do not need so much food and will only pay for 17 pax because they said what they agreed was to only pay for the number of guests who turn up. This is impossible as I know CK will never agree to such terms because it is simply ridiculous for a business to do so!

A series of arguments ensued and in the end, they settled on paying for 20 pax, took all 36 cupcakes (we made extra), and left.

At this point, it got me thinking: did she really have 30 names on her guest list to begin with? Or was it simply a way to have the cafe closed to public for her party without having to pay for venue rental (required if number of pax is below 30 and you'd still like to have the cafe all to yourself)?

For the past nine months, we've encountered good and bad (more good than bad, thankfully) but this incident is beyond ugly. It is very upsetting and frustrating for me, because I wasn't there at the cafe when it happened and I can't do anything about it now except to express my feelings here.

CK went to 3 different places to source for the special dish they required. We obliged in waiving the service charge and extended our business hours beyond 10pm to accommodate them.

That night, what we've lost wasn't money.
